Preparing for Birth: In Nesting Overdrive

Abandoned bird's nest

I’m in nesting overdrive this week.  It usually hits me around this time, and I don’t think it’s ever been THIS intense!

I suppose with the holidays just being over and with all the “extra” clean-up needing to take place from that I feel a little overwhelmed, too.

I’m 35 weeks this week, which means, in theory, that this baby is almost full-term.  Like….my midwife would not send me to the hospital if labor started next week, but would simply come over and deliver the baby! Of course that’s never happened for us so far.  We’ve always been super blessed to have our babies not only born completely full-term, but then some.  ;)

So, no.  While I’m not thinking this baby will really be here next week, mentally, I am becoming hyper-aware of his impending arrival.

Plus, I’m pretty sure I look like a large penguin when I walk.

And like I said, it’s never been more intense than it is with this eighth baby.  I feel the need to purge every drawer and every cabinet and every box in every room!!  And I’m running out of time!

I’ll be crossing things off the list as I go.

Here’s what I need to get done as soon as possible:

  • bring down the pack and play/bassinet that the baby will sleep in from the schoolroom to my room and clean it, set it up, etc.
  • wash a few pajamas and outfits and burp cloths for the baby
  • buy a few chlorine-free diapers for the baby
  • get my bedroom and bathroom ready (yep…still on the list)
  • order my birth supplies (No, I still haven’t, but it makes sense, seeing how I can’t use them unless I reach the milestone of 36 or 37 weeks, anyway….)

Here’s what needs to be done after that:

  • organizing the laundry room (may sound silly, but it makes me feel more on top of the laundry if that room isn’t a mess!)
  • go through the boys’ bedrooms and get rid of stuff they don’t use or play with including clothes and toys
  • re-organize the schoolroom and closet (so that I don’t feel overwhelmed with homeschooling just after the baby is born)

What would be awesome if I got done before the baby’s arrival:

  • re-organization of the pantry (even though I just did this just before Thanksgiving….doesn’t holiday baking mess up your pantry, too?)
  • cleaning out of the fridge (yuck)
  • freezer stockpile (I really hope I get to this because it is such a blessing to not have to cook after a baby’s arrival.)
  • deep cleaning of our entire home

I know so many of you are expecting babies close to or around my due date.

What’s on your list of things to do before birth?

I never get it all done… but it always works out! I keep thinking I’m not as far along as I am… until I translated it to 3 months instead of x # of weeks…. 3 months seems a lot shorter when I figured out how much we still have left to do.

Can’t wait to meet your new little guy! I really hope you get a lot done, but having been down the 8th child route, I know it’s easier said than done. You have a great list :)

  2. That’s so exciting! I love reading about nesting! I loved that stage! I’m 14 weeks along right now, so I’ve got a ways to go to experience it again…

I have a questiong about homeschooling. Do you stop homeschooling for a certain amount of time after the new arrival, or do you hop right back in?

Freezer cooking is on the top of my list also. I am 36 weeks with boy #6:) I have all the baby stuff washed and sorted…diapers washed and sorted. We need a major clutter out/cleanup session since the holidays tornado came through!

    Have a blessed day!

Freezer cooking is at the top of my list as well as getting extra of the basics we use all the time. I am not too worried about cleaning because my husband is wonderful about helping with that. However, cooking or grocery shopping is a different story! I would love to finish getting Christmas taken down in the next few days. I’d like to get the baby’s room cleaned out and decorated even though she will sleep in our room for at least 6-8 months. Such a silly pregnancy whim! We moved across the country when I was 35 weeks pregnant with our first daughter. I think that has something to do with it. I know I’m driving my poor hubby crazy, though because I didn’t nest last time.

I just discovered your website and love it! I am pregnant with my third child and am 3 weeks from my due date! I have had some serious nesting with this pregnancy, which is strange to me because I did not have the nesting instinct when I was pregnant with my 2 girls! This baby is a boy, so that may have something to do with it. I have already cleaned out every closet in our house, washed and ironed all the curtains and some other serious cleaning. I really need to do some freezer cooking! That is really big on my to do list!

I have also started nesting big time. I’m 34 weeks today with boy #3 & got my c-section date which is 5 weeks from today. The big projects are clean & reorganize the play room to make room for all the Christmas toys, take down all the Christmas decorations & reorganize my pantry (which I also just did a few months ago!) I have been freezer cooking since Oct & my deep freeze is currently full so that’s one thing I don’t have to worry about. I also have to plan a birthday party for my second child who will be 3 2 days after I give birth & then I have a bunch of other little things to take care of. Tomorrow both boys are out of the house for a while so I will make my complete list then. The last thing on my list is to get a pedicure since my awesome parents bought me one for Christmas!

I can’t wait to get to this stage of pregnancy!! I’m only 19 weeks now…looking forward to finding out what this sweet bundle is (Friday)!!! Thinking it’s a boy though….it would be nice for my son to have a brother (he’s already got 3 sisters)! Good luck getting everything done :) Nesting has always been fun to me. It seems my house is cleanest when I’m pregnant and in the nesting stages :)

I am right there with ya! My nesting started a few days ago & I’ve been going non stop. The house still looks like a complete mess but at least the nursery is almost ready & I have the co-sleeper set up…finally! Still need to clean our bedroom from top to bottom (bathroom too), organize the other kiddos bedrooms & get all the laundry folded & put away. No clue how you do it with 7. I can hardly manage with 3! We’ll see how much I can get done. Good luck! :)

I’m due in one week! My “nesting” only really kicked in this past week, and I am trying not to freak out! :-) . One of my main to-do’s over the past several weeks was stocking the freezer. I think we have enough to easily get us through the first few weeks, which will be so nice. I am going for a VBAC with a midwife this time around and am trying so hard to not worry about going overdue. Here if I go more than a week over, I have to be handed over to a doctor and have a c-section scheduled. My goal is to keep busy to keep my mind off the waiting game. I went through our daughter’s closet and toys yesterday and cleaned out the craft closet. I am now hoping to just stay on top of all the basic house keeping and laundry, so that when baby comes, the house won’t be a disaster. Tomorrow I have plans for a big bake-a-thon…whole wheat bread, muffins, etc. for the freezer.

“Bake-a-thons”…..Ahhh…sounds like just my kind of thing!! Too bad we can’t get together! ;) I always go “overdue”, so I am just telling myself this time not to expect him til after the “due date”… ;) Congratulations on your newest addition. Hope your birth is blissful!

  11. It’s funny…..with all these wedding preps going on….I’m reminded very much of pregnancy nesting. Essentially, I’m doing all the same things….well, except the baby related stuff. But with all the cleaning, freezer cooking, and re-organizing, I keep thinking how much this reminds me of preparing for a baby. lol

Sounds like you’re getting a lot done. Did you get your Liquid Chlorophyll? Don’t know if you’ve used it before, but the ChloroFresh brand is the best as far as taste. I made the mistake of buying a different brand for my last birth…ugh…it tasted like salty seaweed. :)

  12. I came across a poll I did two pregnancies ago from my LinkedWithin boxes. Don’t know if you have time for this, but when I saw the poll, I thought it would be fun to guess some of your stats. We know you’re having a boy, but you could do date of birth, time of birth, weight, height….. Anyway, thought it would be fun for your readers.

It was a win on the number of comments too. ; )
