Our Big Family Announcement!

Our large family is getting larger y’all!

We're a Family of 11!! |

Our ninth child is expected to arrive in January 2015!!!  We are a family of 11!!  We couldn’t be more thrilled!

A few interesting thoughts concerning our family dynamics:

  • Our oldest son Nolan will be 23 when this child begins Kindergarten.
  • We don’t have to buy a bigger vehicle since we already drive a 14 passenger van.
  • We don’t have enough bedrooms to comfortably fit all the beds we will soon need.
  • We will probably enjoy this child together with a grandkid or two on our front porch.
  • I don’t feel “too old” to be having a baby.
  • The boys are excited, especially the younger ones, about their new sibling on the way!
  • We were surprised.  As much as a married couple can use that phrase.
  • It’s harder being pregnant at 38 with 8 children already than it was my first few.
  • We are getting stared out (think long, awkward, embarrassing stares) more than ever.
  • At 38, after 10 previous pregnancies, this belly didn’t take long to make its appearance.
  • All-day sickness with 8 kids is a challenge.  I’ve learned more than ever my own tenacity for the slogan, “just keep running”.  Each day is one foot in front of the other.
  • I’m congratulating myself on reaching the second trimester and sickness easing up THIS WEEK!  Thank you, Lord!
  • We only told the boys a couple of weeks ago because we took our sweet time to tell any family or friends.  Only supportive voices in our lives were made aware of our special blessing.
  • Babies are always thrilling, always a gift, always welcome, and always special.  Sharing news with nay-sayers just ain’t fun at all, y’all.
  • I planned to finish my doula certification after our fifth baby, then after our sixth baby, then after our eighth baby.  I began working towards that goal again just before I discovered I was pregnant with our ninth.  I’m finishing it this time!  😉
  • I haven’t done well cooking lately, since I have mostly just been trying to hold down food while taking care of our family.  I’m ready to be back in my Big Family Food groove.
  • I feel extremely blessed.
  • I don’t know what I would have done without my essential oils these past few months!
  • We don’t know the gender yet.  Of course we would be thrilled if it is a girl, but we know the drill with boys.
  • I feel honored to be having a baby at 38.  I wish I’d known 17 years ago with my first pregnancy what I know now.
  • If this baby IS a girl, you’ve never seen so much pink in all your life.
  • If this baby IS a girl, no, sir.  She will not be a tomboy.
  • If this baby IS a girl, you’re probably right.  She won’t date til she’s 30 due to her protective tribe of brothers.
  • If this baby IS a girl, I can hardly wait for the privilege, honor, and joy of fulfilling my motherly duty to teach her to cook, manage the home with delight, to sew, to quilt, to crochet, to bake, to nurture, to sing, to play, to dance, to enjoy being the woman God made her to be.
  • If I hear another complete stranger say to me in front of my children, “You poor thing!” in reference to my number of boys, I promise I will pray for them right there in public! (Kidding. Sort of.)
  • If this baby is  a boy, we will continue in our efforts to train boys into godly, equipped men who are respectful, hard-working, courageous, noble, honorable, integrous, and loving.
  • Children are a blessing.  The end.

  1. Congratulations!!! 🙂 I love this post!

  2. Congratulations!!!!!! Woo hoo so excited for you!!!

  3. Brandee Scoggins says:

Congrats! I know it doesn’t matter but I would LOVE to hear of a girl in your family! They are such a delight and challenge, and the boys will get such a kick out of a baby sister, and you’ll have a girl in the house with you! But boy or girl, it will be lovely.

  4. Congrats!! Can’t wait to hear what you are having. Either way blessing you will have.

  5. What fantastic news! Congratulations! I’m so excited for you and your family. This sweet baby is so blessed to be welcomed into a wonderful family. Yay!

  6. Congratulations! I’m lazing in my recliner, snuggling our sixth baby, only 9 precious days old. Every life is a straight up miracle. Be blessed!

  7. What a wonderful gift you have all been given!! Congratulations to your whole family! =)

  8. WooHoo! Congratulations!!!

  9. Jenny E. says:

Congratulations! Wonderful news. Continued prayers for the rest of your pregnancy!

  10. Congrats Ferguson family!!!! I’m so happy for you all. I know this baby will be a blessing no matter the gender! Love to you all!

  11. Yay! So excited for you guys!

  12. Andrea Kendall says:

Happy and excited for your family!
    Blessings for the Ferguson’s!!

  13. Jessica says:

Congratulations to you! I have two baby girls, 2 and 7 months. I’d like to have more but die to some health issues we may not be able to. I think a full house and a full heart is great! And thanks for the fantastic granola bar recipes. They got
Me through both pregnancies and beyond. Great nursing snack.

  14. Brandy, I’m so thrilled for y’all!! Im praying for you, and for this sweet precious new life on the way! 🙂 xoxoxo

  15. Brandy! So VERY happy for you! You guys are the most inspirational parents I know. I find myself bragging on your family from time to time even though I haven’t seen you in ages. Your boys have always been the most polite, caring, well disciplined boys I have ever met and weather they get a baby sister or another brother they will set the best examples in life because of how they are being raised! God Bless and please keep posting!

  16. This is such exciting news!!! You guys are amazing parents and I am so excited for you all!

  17. Congratulations!!! So exciting! You have a beautiful family!!!

  18. Katy L. says:

YAHOOOO!!! Congratulations! Really there is nothing in the world as sweet as holding your newborn in your arms for the first time. Yep getting teary eyed just thinking about it.

  19. Wonderful news! Congratulations to all of you on this new blessing!!

  20. Maryann D. says:

Congratulations and best wishes to all of you!

  21. Melissa says:

CONGRATS TO YALL! Loved your post. What an amazing blessing!

  22. Jennifer Hodge says:

Congratulations!!! What a gift! and BTW, 37 is great!

  23. Yay congratulations! I am so excited for you all. Our 7th is due in October, and he is our 4th boy 🙂 We started with 2 girls then had 2 boys, one girl, then 2 more boys. Can’t wait to find out if this will make 9 boys for you or a baby girl!

  24. Congratulations, Brandy! I was 38, too, when I was expecting our 9th. Yep, very different. As is 40 😉 Pulling for a girl.

  25. Children are a blessing from the Lord, and a reward from Him. Congratulations!

  26. Christy says:

Congratulations!! I’m so happy for you! We have six…three boys and three girls! I would love to have more!

  27. I know you are probably hoping for a girl, but as mother of 2 boys and one girl, boys are so much easier. And who says your boys can’t cook, bake, sew, knit, etc? There are no longer boy/girl things in life. I have 8 great-granddaughters and one great- grandson. That is from 3 grandchildren, the other 3 grandchildren have not started reproducing yet. Hope every thing goes well with your labor and delivery. Bless you and your family. Take care.

    • Brandy Ferguson says:

Hello Linda, thanks so much. I do believe we still have gender-specific tasks that are unique for individuals. While I have no problem at all teaching my sons to bake (and they know how), or to sew (hmmm), I don’t envision them doing that very often as busy, active protectors and providers as father some day. 🙂

      • How sad for your boys! Part of being protectors and providers is also not being stunted by the social gender rules.

        • Brandy Ferguson says:

Marnie, what do you mean by “stunted by the social gender rules”? Since the beginning of time there have been gender specific roles that are easily embraced by both men and women. I’m not making it into anything more than that. You may want to read this>>>

  28. Wow! A huge congratulations to you!

  29. Amy Mac says:

CONGRATS!! God thought you were doing such an amazing job that He’s giving you yet ANOTHER sweet blessing! To the stranger whose comment was “Oh you poor thing,” I’d like to reply with a more appropriate “Oh you ROCK STAR!!” Raising boys is no joke (I have two girls and our youngest is a boy. And he makes me very tired.), and you are doing an amazing job of raising them to be men of God. Keep it up girl. Can’t wait for the gender reveal… 😉

  30. Congratulations! I have six and was told not to have any more because my body has too much scar tissue(all c-sections) and it’s true grieving for me because I would have more if I could. I’m so happy for you. Thank you for raising good, Godly children.

  31. Oh, blessed you are indeed!

As a mom to 3 girls, I wish for you to enjoy all the wonderful things a girl brings along, and I wish for you that if it is a boy, that you’ll enjoy all the wonderful things that you know boys bring along! If the Lord blesses us with another one I’d be in the same spot (sort of) of wondering what to do if the baby is the opposite sex of what I have learned to be used to!

  32. Congrats!!! I just want you to know that you are my hero. We have 6 boys ourselves and I have experienced all the staring and silly talk you spoke about and it is so wonderful to know there is someone else you understands how blessed big families (of boys!) are. May you have a great pregnancy and many blessings to you!!!!

  33. Very excited for you Brandy!!

  34. Elizabeth says:

Congratulations!!!! I was just telling my husband about you and your family. You are such an inspiration to me. I only have 2 boys right now but I hope God blesses me with the ability and the sanity 😉 to have lots more! You are amazing. Best of luck!! Oh and you are a saint to say you’d pray for the person. I’d probably say I’d punch them in the face. Haha.

  35. Amanda Carrillo says:

AMEN! Children are a blessing. Period.

  36. Katena D says:

As a mom and mother of 6 boys who can no longer have babies. I want to shout from the rooftops congrats. I would love for you to have a girl but know that you will love it regardless. And if I even had a girl she would be drape in pink purple all the cuteness. She will definitely have many protectors. Congrats and what a blessing congrats congrats congrats.

  37. I can’t tell you how excited I am for you and your family! <3 Praying for a healthy pregnancy and baby!

  38. Congratulations! Your post made me cry:} I have a friend with 7 girls and each time someone made a negative comment about her family size she would say, “We’re trying for a boy, y’know.” LOL Our best wished to your entire family for great blessings to come with this new little one.

  39. So excited for you… Congrats!

  40. Congrats!! I had my last baby almost 2 years ago at 39. My oldest was 19. What a huge difference in pregnancies at 20 years old and 39 years old! At 20 I never really ‘felt’ pregnant… 39 I felt, well, 39! Ha Ha. Anyway, congratulations again on your newest blessings. I will be praying for you.

  41. Congrats!!! We counted our blessings! We are pregnant with baby number 4! Due in a few weeks. We have 3 boys and will be having a girl after 3 boys. We are super thrilled and excited to welcome her into this world! We have been pregnant 6 times so we count every child we can have a huge blessing and love our children so dearly. Prayers for a nice pregnancy! I understand the cooking part…I still can’t cook much and my hubby is super sweet about it but makes a huge deal when I DO cook lol.

  42. Cindy H says:

So happy for you and your family! Blessings for your pregnancy. God blessed us with our one and only at 42.

  43. Children are a huge blessing! Congratulations to the whole family. And I do hope you feel good during 2nd trimester.

  44. Congrats! Such exciting news for your family. I have a strong feeling it’s a girl and I’ve never been wrong 🙂 Hehe.

  45. I totally understand the not having enough rooms or space! We lived in a huge house with too much space, then moved to a smaller house and proceeded to have a couple more kiddos! We love our 5 boys, but 3 small bedrooms just isn’t enough! Congrats to y’all! 🙂

  46. Congratulations!

  47. Christi says:

Yay!! Congratulations! If God is for us who can be against?? 🙂

  48. Congratulations! I’m expecting #5 and can’t wait for some pregnancy posts!!:)

  49. Kayla H says:

I have a friend who had 8 boys and then a girl, there IS hope! lol All jokes aside, I know you will be grateful for whatever blessing God gives you. Girls are different from boys, or so I’m told. I am pregnant with #3, a boy, and we have two girls, 2 and 5. It will be an interesting transition, I’m sure. Congrats! 🙂

  50. Congratulations and a happy and healthy pregnancy to you! Obviously you are very good at raising boys since you keep getting them, but maybe this one will be different. It is fun to experience both if the Lord allows! And I can only imagine the stares! I am expecting number 4, have hardly told anyone and so happy not to be showing anymore then I am; I am not looking forward to the comments and stares! Trying to prepare witty responses now!

  51. Congratulations on your newest blessing!!!!

  52. Jessica H says:

Congratulations! I loved reading through all your points. What a wonderful blessing for your family 🙂

  53. Jennifer says:

Congratulations!!!! You are an inspiration to me… I am
About to have my 4th boy and I am so tired of all the pitying comments and looks. I LOvE being a momma of boys. I am good at it! And God knows what He is Doing when He blessed me with them. You look unbelievably amazing… Seriously put me to shame. Thanks for your help with the essential oils- they have been great for me too!!
Again, congrats!!! Boy or girl- you are blessed beyond measure…
    Your quiver is full!

  54. awe, this brought tears to my eyes! What a wonderful post! and Congrats on #9! I so wanted a huge tribe… prayed for 6 boys, but the Lord blessed me with one miracle boy at age 36…… Can’t wait to follow the stories!

  55. Congratulations Brandy! Happy for you! My husband is from a family of 9 children. I’m from a family of 7 children.
I pray God’s blessing for your growing family!

  56. Texadus Farm-Wife says:

Congratulations!!! I had my 11th at 46 (she is 11mos old), my 10th at 41, and my 9th at 39…. And we are a family of 8 boys… and 3 girls.

  57. Could not LOVE this post more! So VERY happy for you!!!

  58. Congratulations!! We are expecting our 7th boy in October. I have to say, I love how you embrace boys being boys and girls being girls. It’s a brilliantly old fashioned, yet completely novel notion these days. For me, I am thrilled to raise my tribe of men in training, and if ever a girl makes her way into our lives (assuming she does not have fur and a tail :)) she will be raised as a little girl who appreciates and revels in the beauty of gender differences. Until then, it is beautiful blue baby dust over here. And in the end, all baby dust is just the most perfect kind, just as it is.
Congratulations again…and thanks so much for all your great recipes and information. Love it!

    • Brandy Ferguson says:

Noelle, I wish we could sit and have coffee or tea together, my friend! Thank you, and congratulations to you, too!

  59. Congratulations! I could totally have written your post. In fact, I wrote one very similar just a few months ago. 😉

Boys are awesome! Our oldest is a daughter, then six sons, and now expecting another daughter! We have two grandsons, as well. Let me tell you, grandchildren the same age as your own babies is SO MUCH FUN!

Many, many blessings to you and yours!

  60. I was so happy to see we are not alone in finding out our family was growing again – we have 5 now with soon to be 6. We just told out children a few weeks ago, because we (rather I) was not ready to deal with the nay-sayers. Congratulations!!! Hope you start feeling better soon :-))

  61. Congratulations! I am sitting here snuggling with my 6th baby, a precious baby boy after having my 5 beautiful daughters. Best of luck to you with the rest of your pregnancy.

  62. Cameron says:

Congratulations! I’m so excited for you!!!!! What an amazing blessing :). God is so good!

  63. I think our Lord has given you so many boys because you are so committed to training them up for him. There is a real need for godly young men in our world!

  64. Congratulations! So excited for your family! Hope the morning sickness subsides soon. 🙂

  65. I loved this post! Congratulations!
    I have 3 sons 🙂

  66. Mamabear says:

So happy for you!!! We just had our first girl after 6 boys, and I’m 42! The responses I got were just what you speculated: “That poor girl will never date!” To which I say, “Darn tootin’! You bet she won’t, and I like it that way !”

  67. Love it. You are so right on all the points 🙂 Congrats, and glad the sickness has eased up! Wonderful news 🙂

  68. Rebekah says:

Yay! I knew it was this kind of a news! I’m the oldest of 7 girls. Everyone can’t believe their ears when they hear it’s “only 7 girls- no boys?!?” Then they follow with “your poor father”. But we tell them he couldn’t be happier- in fact he likes having all girls. We’re a team. We do everything together, we’re dad’s troopers, we run together (which is why I like your blog and blog title) and we learn to be feminine and tough at the same time.

  69. Awesome news! Congrats!

  70. Big congrats! I’m the oldest of nine. My mom had number nine at 40. I was 19. I have 6 boys. I had 4 and we got twin boys. I was 40 🙂 girl or boy children are a blessing! Congrats!

  71. Congratulations! This is the best news, my favorite kind of news. I think about you a lot…my husband and I are expecting our 5th boy (no girls) in November. Thank you for being such an inspiration!

  72. Congratulations!! Just found your blog from Smockityfrocks but I wanted to add mtycongrats to try and out weigh the nay-sayers.

  73. Congratulations, Brandy! I’m so excited for you all and your growing family. I hope you have a healthy pregnancy and that you start feeling better soon!

  74. Congratulations! Beautiful post 🙂

  75. Heather says:

My girl is all about swords and guns and wrestling at 17 months. I’m holding out hope she starts to like girlie stuff! She’ll be having a third brother this fall which will be our last. 🙁 so I’m reeeeally hoping she love the pink explosion soon!

  76. How exciting for your family! There are always naysayers about our decisions in life, aren’t there. I’m sorry that you have to have any raindrops fall on your big announcement. I had my only girl after two boys and we had a lot of pink. I know that whatever the Lord sends will be a blessing to your family….I also know you are going to be a great mother-in-love for lots of fortunate young women some day. Much love to your beautiful family.

  77. susan magdich says:

I had 6 boys, then a girl, then another boy who was born shortly after I turned 43. He’s 5 months now. The girl threw me for a loop and turned me inside out and upside down. And we now overflow with pink, which happens to be stuffed into my husband’s closet. She’s incredible. But so are all the boys. Every one of them is entirely different from the rest and I wouldn’t have it any other way. They are all miracles and incredible gifts from God. Congratulations!!!

  78. Congratulations! So happy for your family!

  79. Congratulations, Brandy! I’m so happy for you and your family!!!

  80. Congrats to you!!! I am #9 and loved it!!! We have 13 and want more!!! I’m 46 and just haven’t been blessed again…yet. I just found out from my oldest daughter who is 24 that she and her husband are expecting!!! Awesome, to be a grandmother!!! Keep up the great work!!! God is so good!!!

  81. Adrianne says:

Congrats to you & your family. We are pregnant with our 6th, due in a couple months & still haven’t told those who wouldn’t be happy for us. It is so tiring hearing the impolite comments from people, it must be part of our cross not to respond in the same fashion. Blessings to you throughout the rest of your pregnancy 🙂

  82. Valerie D. says:

Congratulations, Brandy and Dax!! What an incredible joy and privilege to be given the opportunity to raise another tiny one to love and honor the Lord! The older I get for each pregnancy, the more I realize what a blessing each baby is! 😀 I’m totally over the moon for you guys! Praying for a safe and uneventful pregnancy! 🙂 ~ Valerie, mama of six boys (and waiting with open arms on His timing for more!)

  83. Congratulations, Brandy! I’m so excited for you and your family!

  84. Congratulations!!! Such wonderful news!! Babies are such a blessing. I just had my 5th!

  85. Congratulations! Our family of 5 boys welcomed their first sister last summer! It really didn’t matter if baby was boy or girl – either way was a welcomed blessing! But having a girl is truly special! Wishing you God’s continued blessings as you await the arrival of your baby!

  86. What a happy, happy blessing! So exciting! Praying for an uneventful pregnancy full of peace and health. I don’t know you personally, but seeing this post made my day. (How do you like that?!)

  87. Congratulations! Such wonderful news and a blessing for sure! I am also 38 and pregnant with our fourth. I know there is a huge difference between a ninth child and a fourth, but I have had similar reactions. A lot of people look at me like I’m nuts, I get a lot of comments asking if I “planned” to have this baby (annoying) and way too many comments from people saying “You sure have you’re hands full!” (also annoying). I think it is so sad to see how the majority of people view children – as more of a burden then a blessing. I find your story and family so encouraging! I was told several times through my 20s that I wouldn’t be able to have children, so I see these four children as nothing short of God’s blessings!

  88. Congratulations! I had children in my twenties, thirties and forties and I am enjoying my two last girls here at home. It would seem my body is still equipped for another child, mid-fifties. Funny thing, I used to hear how young I looked all the time. Now, people never say that. It seems they assume I am ten years younger than I am, what with children so young.
