3 Reasons You’re Not JUST a Mom

3 Reasons You're Not Just a Mom |

Something about this season of motherhood with little ones in our constant care makes our minds wander…and wonder.  Is there more to life for me than the mundane repeat cycle of diapers and dishes?

And when we hear those raw thoughts that often come unexpected and uninvited, we shudder.  Did I really just think that?  What’s wrong with me?  I have everything I ever wanted right here and right now.

Why We Long for Something More as Mothers

Those thoughts happen because you’re human, born of sin nature.  But, they also happen because you do matter, too.

They happen because we feel entitled to do something else.  And converselythey also happen because God actually does have more for our lives than just diapers and dishes, and He doesn’t want us to idolize motherhood.

See the dichotomy there?  If left to an extreme and entitlement thinking (I should have more “me time”), motherhood can begin to make you feel isolated and resentful.  If pushed aside when given a healthy reminder to take care of yourself because you’re capable of a little multitasking and you know there are assignments to be preparing for after THIS season of motherhood draws to a close (like being able to work on a business endeavor or building project or a missions trip you haven’t been able to go on because you’ve been nursing or pregnant for 18 years), then you squander time that God could be using to prepare you for future work.

Caught somewhere in the wake of both,  you reconcile yourself to the thought that you’re just a mom.  You concede to the notion that you’re JUST a mom, because it’s easier to try and convince yourself of that than to wrestle with those ambitions that can make you feel both selfish and excited for the future at the same time.  But that’s not right thinking. There is better perspective.  Think about this.

You’re NOT just a mom.  You’re not JUST a mom.  You’re not just a MOM.

3 Reasons You’re Not Just a Mom

1.  You’re not just a mom, you’re an honored woman gifted with children!

You’re a mother.  Being a mom is one of the biggest honors that could have been bestowed upon your life.   Motherhood is a miracle of life, a blessing.

Children are a gift from the LORD; they are a reward from him.  ~Psalm 127:3

There are seasons in motherhood that are harder than others, but they do change.  And there is actually more to your life than just mothering these kiddos right now.  As they get older, and your motherhood season begins to change, you will see.

I remember struggling with this so much as a young mother of one and two children.  I felt forgotten, partly by my own self, and looked forward to the day I wasn’t so overwhelmed with a laundry pile for four people. (That’s funny to me now!)  I had big dreams.  Dreams of writing books and ministering to moms (I knew even back then, especially back then, that I was called to encourage mothers.)  I would write and try to put things together.  I would plan and my plans would fail.  Partly because I was so busy with kids and in the trenches myself.  And partly because it wasn’t my season yet to be working in that capacity.  I tried to get ahead of God.  That never works.  And I can tell you now, almost two decades later, that God always brings about His plans in His timing.  He can put it on your heart, and you can map it out prematurely if you’re impatient like I was, but it won’t succeed until He directs your steps in His timing.

So, yes, sweet mama.  There is more for you in this life than diapers and dishes.  But slow down.  Hang in there.  Those God-sized dreams and plans won’t go away.  If anything, this life experience you’re gaining now will undoubtedly make your success even sweeter when the time comes for those goals to be achieved.

2.  You’re not JUST a mom.  You wear a LOT of hats.  What you do is tremendously important!

What you are doing every day, day in and day out is Kingdom work!  It’s sacred.  You’re a mom which means you are a cook, nurse, negotiator, counselor, driver, advisor, teacher, a daily marathon runner like no other.  You understand like no one else what it means to hit the ground running every morning and to fall asleep before your head hits the pillow every night.  And for good reason.  The training of those little hearts, minds, hands, and feet….That’s the most important job in the world.

Cut yourself some slack.  You’re not JUST a mom – you’re everything it takes to make the world spin in motion for your family.  You’re amazing.  Don’t quit!

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time
we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  ~ Galatians 6:9

3.  You’re not just a MOM, you’re Someone’s mom.  You’re mom to someone very special.

God chose YOU to be the mom to him or her.  Mom to one or mom to twenty, you’re super special.  Completely cut out for the job of being mom to YOUR kids.  You were made for being their mom, and they were created to be YOUR kids – biologically or adopted in.  That means there is no one better equipped than YOU for this job right here.  If you start to believe that you’re no one special because you’re “just another mom”, think again.

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set
you apart…  ~Jeremiah 1:5

I can’t help but think back on the time in my life where I actually didn’t know if I was going to live or die.  You want to know what made me sob the most during those hard weeks?  Not knowing if my children were going to have me as their mama or not.  Sure, I could entertain thoughts of who could fill in for me once I was gone, and maybe my kids’ needs would be physically met, but I knew in my heart that no one could look into their eyes like I could.  No one else could stare them in their sweet little faces and without uttering a single word, compose a love note so loud, so transcendent that nothing else mattered in that moment.  And I wanted to be there for them.  I want to be their mom.  Oh, it’s such a privilege to be their mom, and I want them to get to have this mama who was hand-picked for them (quirky and all).

Go, dear mamas.  Dry your eyes.  Lift your head to your toy-strewn world around you.  This right here.  This thing called motherhood.  It’s for you.  You were made for this.  You ain’t just another mama, my dear.  You’re your family’s rockstar.  You’re their everything.  And you can do this.

  1. Meagan Cooper says:

I LOVE this post. This made my eyes leak a little. Sometimes we need to be reminded of this. I am not just a Mom, I am THE mom in my son’s lives and I will forever be their best friend. My oldest son (5) told me the other day that he would punch someone in the privates if they tried to mess with me. Now THAT is love ladies!

  2. Love it! Thank you!

  3. When your babies grow past the baby years and you look at them through different eyes, it is easy to forget that GOD gave me my son who is now 10 and daughter who is 5. That in His infinite wisdom gave me the tools to do this job of motherhood. I can do this. This was very encouraging to a weary momma. Thanks so much!! 🙂

  4. Thank you for this encouragement!

  5. Thank you for this. I’ve about had yet again. Some days I want a run away because they’re So…intense. I used to be this calm cool sweet girl in college and they’ve turned me into this stressed out thing. I love your reminder that I do matter and AM important because I get to be their mom. Each one of my babies are so beautiful and special to me. Thank you.

  6. This is beautiful. You perfectly articulated how God is in control at all times and what the true goal is amongst the chaos of life. Thanks again.
